Grand Opening: New hydrogen laboratory “HyTechLab4NRW” at ZBT

State Secretary Silke Krebs from the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Economic Affairs will officially open the new ‘HyTechLab4NRW’ hydrogen laboratory at ZBT on 26 September 2024. Admission is free, registration required.

The infrastructure, including media supply, in our main laboratory has been comprehensively modernised and brought up to the latest state of the art. “Here we can now develop and test fuel cells, plant components, and even system-related plants in larger power ranges, for example for mobility or energy supply applications,” says ZBT`s Managing Director Dr Peter Beckhaus, looking forward to the new possibilities.

Professor Harry Hoster, Scientific Director of ZBT, adds: “In the HyTechLab4NRW, we develop and analyse new materials for innovative energy converters, such as noble metal-free catalysts for electrolysis and fuel cells.” Other functional surfaces, such as corrosion protection coatings and new materials for sensors to ensure the quality of hydrogen, are also being investigated here.

Hydrogen derivatives will be essential in the future for the transport and use of renewable energy. Bernd Oberschachtsiek, Operations Manager, who is overseeing the laboratory renovation, also sees this area strengthened at ZBT: “Our capabilities for the development and testing of ammonia technologies have been significantly expanded as part of the laboratory renovation.”

ZBT is a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Johannes-Rau Research Association (JRF). The laboratory opening on 26 September 2024 will therefore take place within the proven framework of a “JRF on Site” event. This means that in addition to the usual speeches, there will also be tours of the new HyTechLab4NRW and the institute, information stands on various topics we work on at ZBT, and opportunities for information exchange and networking.

The event is public and free of charge. However, participation is only possible with prior registration. We look forward to celebrating the laboratory opening with you!
