DAAD on Green Hydrogen Research Tour 2023

Christian Schäfer and Naomi Knüttgen from the DAAD German Academic Exchange Service took a group of 22 doctoral students, postdocs and researchers from various countries working on the topic of “green hydrogen” on a tour of Germany’s research landscape. The first stop on their “Green Hydrogen Research Tour 2023” was the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Center (ZBT) GmbH and the neighboring NanoEnergieTechnikZentrum (NETZ). CENIDE – Center for Nanointegration Duisburg-Essen, the cross-institute center for nanointegration at the Universität Duisburg-Essen, also took part. ZBT Research Manager Theresa Schredelseker gave a brief overview of the institute’s work before our scientists Moritz Pilaski and Sebastian Hirt delved deeper into the topic of electrolysis and explained the differences between PEM and AEM electrolysis. Postdoc Fatih Özcan and PhD student Léon Müller from the Institute of Energy and Material Processes (EMPI) presented their research work on the application of nanoparticles in coatings. Miriam Böhm, Early Career Supporter at CENIDE, pointed out the opportunities that the Center offers young scientists. As an application-oriented research institute, the ZBT also has plenty of challenging activities, networking opportunities and support for doctoral students and postdocs – including the brand new ZBT Research School, a type of graduate college. The subsequent laboratory tours in the ZBT and NETZ were particularly exciting. Over lunch, the guests and resident scientists had the opportunity to engage in extensive discussions. The group members are taking part in the DAAD scholarship program “ERA Fellowships – Green Hydrogen”, which aims to promote young scientists and build international professional networks in the European Research Area (ERA). The participants came from universities in Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.
