Regulation, safety & approval

Are you planning a hydrogen plant but wondering what regulatory requirements you need to consider?


We support you in the design, certification and approval of hydrogen technologies. Whether it’s a test bench, production plant or filling station – we advise you on safety requirements, approval processes and practical implementation. Our expertise ranges from the development and qualification of automated leak detection methods to workshops on regulatory issues, approval procedures and operational safety concepts.

Standardisation

Standardisation is a prerequisite for safety, acceptance and marketability.


The ZBT is actively involved in national and international standardisation processes, where it contributes its experience from research, operations and project work. Our involvement includes technical working groups at ISO and DIN, particularly on topics such as hydrogen quality, interfaces between filling stations and vehicles, protocols and communication standards.


In addition, ZBT was involved in drafting the statement on the General Administrative Regulation (AVV) for the implementation of the Ordinance on the Quality and Labelling of Motor Fuels and Fuels in Germany (10th BImSchV / DIN EN 17124:2019). Our experience from research, operations and projects thus flows directly into the further development of relevant regulations.

Systemic analyses & studies

Would you like to know how hydrogen systems fit into larger contexts – economically, ecologically, and technically?


We carry out systemic and techno-economic analyses along the entire hydrogen value chain. These include, among other things:

  • Source-sink analyses for the development of regional hydrogen economies

  • Concepts for the distribution and use of hydrogen in industry and mobility

  • Technology comparisons and transformation paths

  • Life cycle analyses (LCA) and life cycle cost analyses (LCC) of different technology paths

Further services offered by ZBT

Development

Development work at the ZBT includes the systematic design, material development and operating strategy of electrochemical components. The aim is to optimise fuel cell and electrolysis systems for specific applications along their entire value chain – using established CAD tools, laboratory-based materials research and simulation-based control concepts.

Measurement and Testing Procedures

ZBT offers a comprehensive portfolio of measurement and testing methods for components and systems used in hydrogen and fuel cell technology. The focus is on analytical methods for material characterisation, electrochemical testing methods, quality testing during development and investigations into ageing behaviour.

Modelling & Simulation

Using physically based models and simulation-based approaches, we analyse transport and reaction processes along the hydrogen value chain – from porous materials to cells to entire plants. Our models help to understand systems, identify weak points and efficiently develop new solutions.
